Company Profile

San Antonio Water System
Company Overview
San Antonio Water System is one of the largest municipal water utilities in the country, providing water and wastewater services to more than one million customers every day. In addition to nationally-recognized conservation and water recycling programs, SAWS responsibly manages the San Antonio region’s water resources through its 50-year water management plan. With this framework, SAWS is effectively managing existing water supplies while developing new water sources for the future – helping San Antonio diversify our water supply and ensuring sustainable, affordable water services.
Over the last two decades, SAWS has developed the nation’s best conservation and water management programs. Working with residential, commercial and industrial customers, SAWS aims to save at least a billion gallons of water each year. Thanks to our focus on conservation, SAWS is still providing the same amount of water today that we did more than two decades ago, despite a 67% increase in customers.
Through SAWS, San Antonio is also home to one of the nation’s largest aquifer storage and recovery (ASR) projects. At our ASR site in southern Bexar County, we take water that is pumped from the Edwards Aquifer and store it underground in the Carrizo Aquifer. In case of severe drought, SAWS can pump that water back to the city for our customers. More than 30 billion gallons of water is already stored underground for future use, which is about one-third of San Antonio’s annual water use. At this same site, SAWS will begin production at their new desalination plant in the fall of 2016. Once completed, the desalination plant will be the largest inland plant in the United States.
